Shelby's story
Fall 1998 
Shelby Abandoned in a field between two roads is where I first met Shelby. Her intense fear of humans grew as people chased her to catch her, then realizing that she was too wild, they gave up and left. Feelings of bleak isolation came over me as I looked where this frightened girl had to find food and shelter to survive. I tried to assure her I was someone who would not give up on her until she was safe and snuggled with other pigs. Her fear was so strong it took many visits to build even the tiniest bit of trust. Now at the Sanctuary Shelby instantly became best friends with Spud. She has slept side by side with him since her first night here. It is very touching to watch her seek him out and snuggle up close. Despite what she has been through Shelby is sweet and gentle and now comes running to greet visitors - now trusting that she is safe.
